Educated in Switzerland, the UK and Germany, Professor Luther has extensive experience leading international academic partnerships in Europe and beyond.  In the late 1980s, he co-initiated an Inter-university Co-operation Programme in Comparative Politics and directed if for approximately 10 years.  That network eventually embraced 10 universities in eight countries and included student and staff exchange, curriculum development and multinational postgraduate research training.

Richard Luther is Professor of Comparative Politics.  In recent years, his research has focussed on political parties’ organization and strategy, party competition and the role of political parties in deeply divided societies.  He has been a member of the (International) Association for the Study of German Politics since 1980 and was elected to its Executive Committee on several occasions.  From 2003 to 2016, he was Convenor of the European Consortium for Political Treatment’s Standing Group on Political Parties, which has hundreds of members located across five continents.  He played a major role in initiating and then (co)-directing the Standing Group’s annual multinational PhD Summer School, held for the 25th time in 2015.

Professor Luther has delivered lectures at universities and public fora in numerous European countries, throughout the USA and in China.  He has held visiting positions at the Institute for Advanced Studies and the Austrian Academy of Sciences, both in Vienna.  In 2008, he was appointed Visiting Professor at Vienna University.  In 2014, he was awarded a three-year part-time Guest Professorship at Shanghai’s Tongji University under the Chinese government’s ‘Recruitment Program of Global Experts 1000 Talent Plan’.

Professor Luther holds the Austrian Cross of Honour for Science and Arts.
